Abstract:
Biological data is increasingly being produced at a very large scale. Tools and skills for locating relevant existing data online have become as important as library research and laboratory experimental techniques. This seminar describes the tools available at the UCSC Genome Informatics web site, genome.ucsc.edu. Since the release of the working draft of the human genome sequence in 2000, this site has become the host to many important high throughput data collections, and integrates information from many curated databases as well. The talk will start with some of the finer points of using the popular Genome Browser tool, and then describe how the primary UCSC gene set is created. Next we’ll look at some newer tools including Genome Graphs (for visualizing the results of association and linkage studies) and VisiGene (a virtual microscope with huge library of in-situ images). We’ll conclude with a look at the data mining tools the Gene Sorter and the Table Browser.
